Summer Workshops: Children of Langa Community

August 2021

Mehrangarh Fort and Museum

Team: Krishna Shekhawat, Bhawani Singh

Music of the Langa community, has been a generations-old oral tradition in Rajasthan. Most of the Lange artists in Jodhpur have migrated from nearby villages for better opportunities in the city. Over the years efforts have been made to bring Langa music to centre stage by connecting artists by connecting them wit a global audience and encouraging collaboration with other musicians to create fusion music. The younger generation of the Langa community have started their musical training from the age of five. However, many of them are losing interest in carrying forward their art, wanting to break out of the tradition. During the pandemic, many locals schools in Jodhpur were shut and as a result children of the Langa community were out of school for two years. Alongside that, many musician and artist communities in the city were also out of work. This time was spent in their musical training at home and song recording. The curatorial team of the Mehrangarh Museum (Krishna Shekhawat, Bhawani Singh, Ashmi Mridul), organised summer workshops for the children to learn about their lives, interests, and future aspirations as well as introduce them to other allied fields to deepen their connection with Langa music and widen their exposure
