Berlin

During my internship at the Public Art Lab, Berlin, I devised and ran a five-day Light Workshop for students of the Kathe Kollwitz Gymnasium School. The workshop focused on giving an all-round education about 'Light' under the topic- 'Light Technologies/ Light Rituals/ Light Scenarios'. It aimed at instilling environmental consciousness through a series of hands-on activities and discussions. Students were taught how to build their own lighting objects with everyday materials, focusing on recycling and renewable energy sources. They also learnt about light rituals in different cultures and celebrated the Indian festival of Diwali. The workshop introduced students to basic programming of LEDs through a crash course in Arduino.

India

On my return to my home city Jodhpur, in India, I learnt that Jodhpur has the highest solar radiation, but the potential of this natural resource was largely untapped. In addition, I learnt that the refugee community of Jodhpur did not have electricity connections. It was a good opportunity to connect the potential with need. I collaborated with the Inner Wheel Club of Jodhpur, an all-women's social organisation to conduct the Light Workshop with refugees. The workshop aimed at sharing knowledge to make the refugee community self-sufficient. Later, the workshop was conducted with students from low-income families studying in Rup Bal Niketan Prathmik Vidhyalaya, Jodhpur. The design of solar lights was adapted to the local climate and needs of these communities. By training members of the Inner Wheel Club, we prepared more trainers and the workshop travelled to other parts of the country like Khapoli (Maharashtra), Bhatinda (Punjab) and Sirsa (Haryana) where urban and rural women and children benefitted. By training trainers, we formed a chain of ongoing workshops which has not only illuminated houses of the electricity deprived but has provided the women of Khapoli and Jodhpur with employment opportunities and made them economically empowered.
