Kahi-Suni is a project documenting women's stories of marriage migration. In India, women constitute the largest group of migrants, with majority of them moving from one place to another because of marriage. Despite its scale and prevalence, women's migration has largely been overlooked from the global discourse of migration and their stories, forgotten. As young girls, we have grown up listening to stories of our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and sisters-in-law reminiscing the places they left behind and reflecting on their journeys of change and transformation. Through this project we wanted to capture these stories and bring them onto a public platform for further research and introspection.
The stories were documented through an oral history and material archive. We interviewed six women across socio-economic backgrounds and geographies. In the exhibition, a carpet made of sarees laid the foundation for conversations to unfold. The stories were played through telephones, the most common object of connection in a migrant's life. They were installed in an intimate space along with other archival objects, recreating the world of these women.

Online archive
Expanding this project further, we have set up an online archive and a network of migrant women who've shared their stories. A team of researchers across the country will interview women, collect secondary resources and build the archive for further use by academics, students, artists and culture enthusiasts.
